Henry David Thoreau said: “There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil to one who is striking at the root.” The story of the Middle East is deceptively simple. For all the analysis, and needless complication, the decay begins at the root. The root in question, is Radical Islam.
A comment made several months ago by a Saudi Cleric has recently begun to garner wide attention. Sheikh Abdullah Daoud is calling for all female infants to be covered up in burkas. He cites apparent wide-spread incidents of sexual molestation, and exploitation of babies as the reasoning behind his pronouncement.
In reaction, other Clerics have decried Daoud, saying his comments are making Islam look bad. According to Al Arabiya News, Sheikh Mohammed Al-Jzlana said that “…whenever he sees a family walking around with a veiled baby, [it is an] injustice to children.”
Let’s break this down.
1. First, if Daoud believes that putting a burka on an infant will stop the exploitation and abuse that is apparently wide-spread; he is missing the root cause of the problem.
2. The Clerics that are so offended by Daoud’s remarks claim that it’s an “injustice” to force children to wear a burka. If it’s an injustice to children, why is it not an injustice to adult women?
Putting a burka on an infant to protect them from abuse is like hacking at a branch to kill a tree. The root of this problem lies within the heart and soul of Islam itself. Radical Islam is a religion that teaches its adherents to value a man’s life over a woman’s; that women are inferior to men; and that those who disagree with them need to be terminated.
The total regional dominance of a faith that denigrates its own must have an extraordinary effect on those living in the region it dominates. A faith that advocates the “honor killing” of disobedient women and men must infect the minds and hearts of those in the region in which that faith is practiced. Islam is a religion that replaces light with darkness; and the dimmer the light becomes, the further evil can flourish.
As a culture devalues one life, it eventually devalues all life. That is the origin of the abuse in the Middle East. Placing a burka on a child will not stop that.
The moral and societal blindness in Radical Islam is staggering. Until these hypocritical Clerics wipe away the soil, and dig out the decaying root, they will never stop hacking the branches in vain. But the root is so deep, it may never be found.
